Design Diary Film Series: The Summer I Turned Pretty

Summer is upon us, which means only 1 thing… Beaches, Boys and oh yeah…Sour Patch kids or Swedish Fish?? The Season Finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty has almost arrived!! As a tribute to the finale, let's take a closer look into Beck’s house at Cousins Beach and the story it's interior tells- especially for those who can't get enough, (like me).

A few years ago Jenny Han captured our hearts when the book series of The Summer I Turned Pretty released. Today we are hooked as we watch the show that brought the books to life. Whether you're rooting for Team Jeremiah or Team Conrad (the obvious one), the show has become a popular sensation not only for the love triangle, but for the home that people have fallen in love with. It truly makes us count the days until Summer has officially arrived.

Beck House: 1733 Futch Creek Rd

Hydrangeas have never looked better—especially in front of the iconic residence at Cousins Beach. From the blue-gray shingle walls to the crisp white columns framing the facade, every detail is picture-perfect. Let’s just say, I look at that house the way Belly looks at Conrad. The exterior has a Coastal Cottage style, with oval windows and timeless French doors that seem to invite the sunlight in throughout the home.

The magic of the home unfolds as our eyes meet the back exterior. An infinity pool and outdoor shower instantly transport us to coastal living—where the scent of salt lingers in the air, and every day calls for a refreshing dip. It feels as though the entire home was thoughtfully designed to embrace the lake views and capture the essence of summer entertaining.

Kitchen:

Known for its signature Pomegranate margaritas, this kitchen invites guests to grab a bite, have a conversation, and of course, a little red drink. The space feels light and airy, with a soft neutral palette complemented by an accent of vintage jade green- often spotted at antique shops from time to time. We see a mix of rattan textures on wall scones and counter stools, adding a classic coastal charm. There is a simplicity to the kitchen that draws us in: a panel ready fridge, open shelving for glassware and cook books, and a stainless steel range. Nothing overpowers anything, making us feel like we could recreate a kitchen like Susannah’s in our own homes.

Dining Room: Pink Lobster

Dinner is served—and so is the beauty of Susannah’s pink dining room. The space reflects a traditional style that embodies the home’s original character, with classic trim and beautiful moldings. Here, color takes center stage: the pink walls make a bold statement, balanced by a soft, natural cream wainscoting that wraps around the room at about three-eighths of the way up. Lightly pleated drapery adds just a touch of pattern, but it’s the pink that truly steals the show.

Decor is kept minimal, allowing each piece to feel intentional. Decorative plates hang on the walls like heirloom jewelry, collected or passed down through generations. A portrait—perhaps of Susannah’s grandmother—adds a personal touch, while an antique hutch displays her blue and white china, feeling like another family treasure. Only the most sentimental pieces can be found here, as this room is reserved for special occasions (like Belly’s 16th birthday), creating a safe spot for heirlooms from the past.

Belly’s Room:

This room is dedicated to the only little girl in the house—just as I imagine Susannah would have wanted, creating a special place for Belly to call her own. It’s the only bedroom in the house adorned with wallpaper, as seen in the series. The pattern is a timeless blue-and-white Ocean Toile from Schumacher, setting the tone for a chic coastal feel. In the room we spot treasures from memories of the past. Susannah’s painted portraits, a plush polar bear named Junior Mint, and a miniature tea set I imagine little Belly once played with during a quiet summer afternoon with Laurel and Beck, while the boys played their video games in the living room. You’re a real one if you know what I mean.

The white bed, vintage with its aged brass hardware, anchors the room. We spot a little bit of Belly’s personality with green nightstands being the only pop of color as if its been added in her teenage years. Other white furnishings quietly complement the space, allowing the wallpaper and soft blue-and-white linen drapes to take the spotlight in this relaxing retreat. There’s nothing like returning from a day at the beach to the gentle squeak of hardwood floors and a room that whispers, summer is here. The beauty of this space lies in its simplicity—the wallpaper truly says it all. To the left of Belly’s bed, a collage of small vintage frames adds a personal touch. With a room this charming, you don’t need much else—and that’s exactly what makes it the perfect Belly room.
